Such a powerful read! This was my first read of the year, although I purchased the book in 2023! It resonated deeply with me. The reality is that we live in a world that is not always kind to Black women and if you are a Black woman, it is important to learn how to navigate through stereotypes and societal expectations.
One of the most compelling parts of the book is when Candice talks about her fear of having children out of wedlock. She discusses how, as a Black woman, there’s often a societal pressure to adhere to a certain image, especially when it comes to family! Candice’s vulnerability in sharing her thoughts on being judged for her choices, despite being in a committed relationship, truly resonated with me. I have felt the weight of those societal expectations and the fear that you are somehow ‘failing’ because you do not meet a traditional standard of family structure. Candice's openness about her own fears and the judgment she faced was incredibly empowering, and it made me reflect on how far we still have to go in dismantling these outdated narratives.
I can truly say that I relate to much of what Candice discusses in this book, from her Caribbean background and the role her grandparents played in her life to her personal aspirations. This book is a reminder that our struggles, often shape us into who we are meant to be.
This is an essential read for anyone who wants to understand the reality of being a Black woman in today’s society.
